Coastal Fishing Reliance

Coastal Fishing Reliance

Coastal fishing in Massachusetts is often seen as a recreational activity, yet for many residents it plays a vital role in livelihood. Beyond leisure, coastal fishing helps supplement household food supplies, strengthens community connections, supports cultural traditions, and contributes to physical and emotional well-being. As food prices continue to rise and food insecurity affects a growing number of households, access to locally caught seafood provides an important source of fresh, nutritious, and culturally meaningful seafood that might otherwise be inaccessible.

This project uses in situ surveys and interviews to better understand who relies on coastal fishing, how harvested catch contributes to household food systems and cultural food practices, and what barriers limit access to coastal resources. Findings will inform recommendations aimed at strengthening  food security, promoting equitable access, and supporting inclusive and sustainable coastal management.
