CFF Leatherback Research at the 44th International Sea Turtle Symposium in Hawaii

CFF research biologist Samir Patel presents leatherback research

March 12, 2026

CFF research biologist Samir Patel spent last week in Hawaii connecting with colleagues at the 44th International Sea Turtle Symposium. This year marked the first time the symposium was held in Hawaii, just south of Kailua-Kona, a location uniquely tied to sea turtles, or honu, which are iconic to the islands and highly revered in traditional Hawaiian culture.

The annual conference draws hundreds of attendees to share and discuss research on sea turtle biology, ecology, and conservation. Samir presented his research, in collaboration with NOAA NEFSC, on leatherback foraging in Massachusetts waters. Being in Hawaii also gave him the chance to experience the stunning landscapes and ecosystems that make these islands so special.
