Tension in the Air

Using a Tensiometer to Assess Dredge Fullness and Loss During Haul-back Comparing Different Dredge Configurations

April 21, 2026

CFF is sharing the results of a recently completed research project examining how dredge configuration relates to catch performance and loss in the sea scallop fishery. Three dredge configurations were evaluated using a tensiometer to measure warp tension in real time, which was strongly associated with catch rates. Catch loss was influenced by gear design and scallop size, with smaller scallops more susceptible to loss. The 5-row apron maintained scallop catch rates but showed only modest reductions in windowpane flounder bycatch compared to the extended-link apron.
