Exploratory Squid Jigging Research — Northern Shortfin Squid (June 2026)

Our team is using automatic squid jigging rigs in the Northwest Atlantic to study unmanaged oceanic squids that could support new fisheries but remain poorly understood in their oceanic range. This trip, the rigs were pulling up Illex by the basket in off-shelf waters with depths of over 1,000 meters, from Washington Canyon off Maryland up to Veatch Canyon off Nantucket.
