Behind the Scenes: Larval Scallop Sampling
AT SEA MINI-DOCUMENTARY
May 26, 2026
Our latest behind-the-scenes mini-documentary follows CFF senior research biologist Andrew Corso and the team as they deploy a custom pump sampling system in the Mid-Atlantic to study larval bivalves and other zooplankton.
The system pumps nearly 190 gallons of seawater per minute through a filtration net, allowing researchers to collect and analyze organisms living at specific depth intervals. Back on shore, the samples are examined under a microscope to identify the species present and better understand their vertical distribution in the water column.
This work helps build a clearer picture of larval scallop ecology and the broader marine ecosystem offshore.
